@Mel:
“First of all I had in mind you telling the listeners on the broadcast one of the mods you would be covering on the next broadcast, or does that require too much forward planning?”
To be honest we don’t always know which mods we are covering. Most of the time it’s from what ever appears during the week. Listeners can follow which items are currently planned via the Forum. There is a section which lists each transmission and the items planned.

“Just how much listener involvement do you want?”
AS much as we can get but perhaps we need to clarify involvement. I know you feel that I am too negative towards other people’s ideas but I do try see things from other people’s point of view, but I am just sure about what I want.

When I use the term “listener Involvement” I really mean interacting with the site rather than simply making suggesting. My Audio Question idea is a good example.

Yes, we could do an Off-Topic section. Just for clarification it’s not me that calls them “Total Conversions” that’s an industry recognized name.

Portal is part of Half-Life in that it is set in the same fictional universe, although I don’t think I want to cover it.

Other people have said that we are in danger of limiting ourselves but I disagree.

Ok… time for my comments. I haven’t read Phillips answers yet because I do not want to be biased. The beauty between Phillip and I is that we work so well even though we have frequent disagreements. So I will first address the listeners feedback. Then if I have time I will address Phillips answers.

SOOOooo. Here we go.

—————————
Listener Feedback Response
—————————

First off thanks all for replying to the survey. I shall now post my responses to some of the things that I would like to touch upon:

General Results:

It seems most of you love the Discussion period and I do do… we are starting to move towards a more discussion based show concentrating less on news and more on the topics at hand in the industry. I am glad to see that a lot of you love this feature.

Left For Dead news is already starting to phase itself out. We will be covering this less. When asked “What is your least fav part of the show” a lot of you responded Left For Dead news. I assure you… the listeners that we will be covering this less and less each episode (in the last episode we didn’t even mention it). So with that said; the next worse section would be video of the week. We are trying to pick more interesting videos, but I myself, personally, think this can be replaced with something a bit more interesting.

I see that none of you are using iTunes, which discourages me because i put a lot of hard work into the iTunes part of this show; however most people who use iTunes do not frequent the site so it is obvious to see these sorts of results.

Specific Results:

@Adding a voting system to choose blast from the past
This is interesting, we have been neglecting the Black from the Past segment recently and would like to revive it. This could go hand in hand with a sort weekly voting segment. Our new layout might incorporate this type of voting system.

@More news and reveiws on mods.
I like the review idea, but I think people are a little fed up with the amount of news on the podcast; usually they can get this news by themselves or already know it through the week. I will try to make it an effort to talk more about what I think of the mods that are out instead of just saying “Hey this new mod is out”

@Maybe introduce a couple of lesser known of maps/mods for HL1 and HL2 of the past years that you have found enjoyable/interesting/unique. Also, how about an audio review for some of the mods?
This goes hand and hand with the aforementioned Blast from the Past and audio reviews. It might be a good idea though to have separate blog audio posts for reviews of mods throughout the week. That would be really cool. We are starting to migrate the blog to the main page.

@Maybe do a test recording before the show to make sure everyones mics come through at the same(ish) volume.
We have started using an equalizer that levels out the sounds. We apologize for the early shittiness of sound quality.

@Fix Williams accent. ;)
My Canadian accent is just fine eh.

@[I would like to see] chatting with valve staff
Trust me… so would I. Hopefully in the near future!!!

@[I would like to see] Map of the Week, or Mod of the week, or at least discuss some new maps, you can find plenty of cool releases on mapcore and Interlopers for example.
This is a great idea. I don’t see why we haven’t done something like earlier. Unfortunately sifting through all the maps in one week is a monumental task. Maybe we can get a representative from Interlopers to pick us a map of the week each week.

@Let the guests talk more so than just their segment or interview.
We try to encourage guests to talk a bit more, sometimes they are just shy.

@Don’t have more than two guests on at-a-time please.
We are going to try to avoid this in the future.

@stay regular because not very many people like it when the podcast comes out a day later than expected.
We record every Sunday. We aim to release every Monday. Tuesday at the latest.

@You could talk about the half life episode 3 art and post it on the site to view as you talk about it.
This is interesting. I hope to replace the L4D section with EP3 section in the near future (when we start getting more news about it)

@Maybe less “random guests”.
We are going to try to get developers who release something the week before or in the near future. Interviewees that mean more to the listeners instead of people who just release screenshots.

@Be more awesome.
I wake up hoping to be more awesome every single day.

@Less of the immature arguing and slating bad mods, if they are bad, just don’t talk about them.
We will avoid this in the future, however I think it is important to define bad mods to make sure people steer away from them.

@Oakley: You had some good points in the survey, which I address above.

@Tell Phillip to stop whining about multiplayer games and zombies.
I think you just did :P

@Phillip needs to stop saying, “boooooooring”, and it comes off as childish and silly.
This is the staple of our show now!! It might as well be our slogan. “Podcast17: Everything else is just booooooooooooring!!”

@though perhaps more room could be given to a topic which has the leags.
I’m not sure what this means.

@I tend to listen at least twice.
Wow… I don’t even like editing because I have to listen through it all again :P

@so no doing away with Phil!
Phillip is not going anywhere.

@[I want a] Random Gaming Enlightenment Moment
“Today Half-Life has taught me the importance of brushing my teeth”… something like this?

@[Needs more] Girls
Tell me about it.

@well, a listener sven coop, or synergy might be fun, so we could all play with you guys.
This is already in the works, tune into this weeks show for more information.

@I think maybe it would be a good idea to do a visual podcast,
We’ve thought of this before, however its a huge amount of work. Maybe if we get a larger staff and people who have some pretty good video experience we can move onto this.

@It would be nice to have the forum grow!
WE are going to try to encourage this in the next coming of shows.

@Maybe tell in advance one of the mods you will be talking about the following week so we can play before the broadcast.
We do this in the forums, you can check the transmission details a week before we record the show.

@What about broadcasting twice a week
I can’t broadcast this much. We record on sunday… it takes me all day sunday to get things together. Then I edit which usually bleeds into Monday and I also do timestamping and linking, Nick posts the show online while I sleep, then we do PR which leads into Tuesday, then we let the podcast sit for a bit and respond to listeners throughout the week. While at the same time still gathering information for the next show :P

Alrighto… so that’s all she wrote (or you wrote) so far! In terms of the length of the show a lot of you seem happy about an hour and half which is what we shoot for.. so that’s good to hear.

Phillip said “How else would you suggest to get the listeners more involved”

First of all I had in mind you telling the listeners on the broadcast one of the mods you would be covering on the next broadcast, or does that require too much forward planning?

Just how much listener involvement do you want? Some of the good listener’s suggestions have received negative response and it’s no good asking for them if you are going to put too many restrictions on what you will accept. Being a die-hard HL SP gamer I can understand your preference for keeping the Podcast Half-Life, however, I see no problem with an ‘Off Topic’ segment which would widen the horizon for a short period. If there are some good Valve products for the SP gamers then it would nice to know about them. The segment could also include what Phillip calls Total Conversions of which they are many great examples. For me Portal is not Half-Life neither is strictly only puzzle based mods, are you not going to talk about any future Portal development or releases, don’t you think you are in danger of being too restricted with your content?

Let’s cleave the wording a bit, shall we? :D Technically it probably is more of a Source Engine podcast since mods on here don’t necessarily have to fit under the Half-Life theme. Or am I wrong? You’d have to know which mods are made using which source bases etc., but that’s obviously too complicated.. By all means keep calling it Podcast17! I keep saying to my mates that I mod Half-Life 2 instead of Source. Nobody knows what the other things is. :)

Cheers!

Alright cheers for your comments!
I totally hear where you are coming from. I understand that this is the way you want to do the podcast and in all honesty it’s fine as it is! I haven’t stopped listening yet anyway.
And keep up the good work guys =]

@Oakley: “I feel that generally it seems people want you guys to talk more about other content for other Valve games, but you are saying you want to stick to Half-Life.”
What makes you think that generally people want us to talk about other games? There’s nothing in the survey or comments that suggest that.

“but you also state that there is not enough content to have a M(map)OTW.”
That’s correct. To have a map of the week, I feel we need a least a few good ones to make a selection, otherwise it just tends to be the best of 2 or 3 and that’s isn’t the reason for having a MOTW in my view.

“I just think sticking to just HL and full mods (with the exception of a few map packs you’ve mentioned) you are really limiting the show and eventually you will run out of content, or at least it will get very boring”
I disagree, there is plenty of stuff to discuss, both new and old. New stuff is released all the time and other topics could be used. I have 100 polls on PP that could be used as the basis of discssions too.

“I understand your concern though with the failure of the L4D news, perhaps it just should be integrated into other news like mentioned above.”
I don’t think there was a “failure” of L4D news, listeners just didn’t want to hear about it. I don’t think it should be integrated into the main news section either, because it’s not HL related.

Ah, timing!
I feel that generally it seems people want you guys to talk more about other content for other Valve games, but you are saying you want to stick to Half-Life. I know that’s the point in the podcast, original point, but you also state that there is not enough content to have a M(map)OTW.
I am guessing that the vast majority of guests are also going to be cs/tf/l4d players and I know that people haven’t been enjoying the L4D news but I strongly believe the show would benefit from broadening into these other Valve games. It’s going to open you up to a lot more custom content which in my opinion is totally relevant. I just think sticking to just HL and full mods (with the exception of a few map packs you’ve mentioned) you are really limiting the show and eventually you will run out of content, or at least it will get very boring. I understand your concern though with the failure of the L4D news, perhaps it just should be integrated into other news like mentioned above.
For me I really think it should be more of a ‘Valve’ podcast than a ‘Half-Life’ podcast, I really believe it would make more sense, content wise.

Ah okay, thanks mate. Was just wonderin’!

I’ve filled it out, lookin’ forward to hearing about what’s been said and what you plan to do about it all!

Cheers

Okay, I have just spent 90 minutes reviewing the survey and replying to some of the comments.

SO here they are:

“Once the community grows more active, perhaps have the community vote from a selection of classic modifications, maybe one to three shows in advance, and use the winner for blast from the past. If you had played it you’ll have an opinion on it and can rely on nostalgia, if not you get to discover a possible new favorite modification and can speak about it from a modern perspective.”
That’s a good idea, although I believe e that William and I sg=hould choose the Blast From The PAst for a while because it allows us to share our favorite mods. However, there will come a time when listeners should be able to influence which mods are listed.

“I use a browser which is a derivation of Internet Explorer 6 and the logo is currently almost pure white.”
Sorry to hear that. Unfortunately that’s an issue with your old browser rather than our design. Nic may read this and look into it though.

“Maybe introduce a couple of lesser known of maps/mods for HL1 and HL2 of the past years that you have found enjoyable/interesting/unique.”
That’s exactly what Blast From the Past is. We just haven’t done it every week.

“Also, how about an audio review for some of the mods?”
Well we feel that we do that already. If we mention a mod has been released one of us gives their review of it.

“Maybe do a test recording before the show to make sure everyones mics come through at the same(ish) volume.”
“more quality control with regard to microphone volume / quality levels of your guests.”
We do but not everybody’s microphone is of similar quality and sometimes things change from the test to the recording. However, we should do more to ensure the levels of each speaker are closer to each other.

“Post on PlanetPhillip when a new show is released. I was late listening to transmission 9645 because it wasn’t on the front page. I’ll remember to bookmark podcast17.com now, but other new users might get caught out by that too.”
I’ll try but I don’t always have time. It’s a completely separate project remember.

“Fix Williams accent. ;)”
I’ll try!

“Maybe one day someone from Valve will be a guest on the show!”
I am going to contact them in January. I wanted to wait to increase the audience before inviting them on.

“Map of the Week, or Mod of the week, or at least discuss some new maps, you can find plenty of cool releases on mapcore and Interlopers for example.”
I honestly don’t think there are enough maps or mods released each week to do that. If you combined all genres and games maybe, but then the idea seems silly.

“Let the guests talk more so than just their segment or interview.”
We try but a few are shy. Also, it takes a few times to feel comfortable recording the show, at least for most people.

“Don’t have more than two guests on at-a-time please.”
We try not to. But if a mod wants to bring two people we don’t want to refuse.

“Also, if there are guests on, be sure to have them state who’s talking before they speak each time, because it gets confusing when one is not sure which guest is talking. I know a lot of other podcasts do this.”
That’s an excellent point. I’ll discuss this with William and we’ll try it soon.

“please stay regular because not very many people like it when the podcast comes out a day later than expected. Listeners try to fit the podcast into their schedule which is regular, so by you guys not staying regular, some folks might miss an episode or two.”
That’s sounds perfect but in reality it’s very hard. Work commitments etc make setting a concrete schedule very hard. In fact I believe we said at the beginning we would release on Tuesdays. We have done this for most, with one on a Wednesday (Which was due to a technical issue) and a few on Mondays, which is actually earlier. I do take your point though and will chat to William about setting an exact time and date that we feel we can agree.

“More focus on Half-Life content rather than Valve/Gaming universe, after all it is Podcast 17.”
Personally I agree completely. I don’t want to cover Valve but Half-Life. William felt that most HL players were probably interested in L4D, so we covered that for a while. The stats are quite interesting in that most people put L4D as their least favorite part of the show, so expect to see that slowly disappear.

“Need to advertise more on websites that you exist.”
We contacted EVERY website we know about and regularly send them updates. There’s little we can do if they don’t post the details. Do you have any specific ideas on how we can improve our publicity?

“You could talk about the half life episode 3 art and post it on the site to view as you talk about it. Black Mesa Section (Talk about it more)”
There’s only so much you can say about EP3 before it just becomes silly. With so little information about it, the rest is just guess work. I’m not sure how much we could talk about BMS either. I have emailed the team leader and hopefully we can arrange an interview soon.

“Have debates about different things to make it controversial and more interesting. Talk about Valve history events, people who work at valve, other valve games, the source engine, what the new engine should look like after source.”< .em>
We try to discuss interesting topics but it’s strange how some planned discussions just don’t generate what we expected, whereas other topics seem to spring into life.

I definitely don’t want to talk about the people at Valve or their other games. The podcast is supposed to be about Half-Life, not Valve.

“You could integrate the L4D-news into the general HL-news later on, when the big hype has cooled off”
We will probably drop L4D completely as it’s not related to Half-Life.

“Make it longer, just a little. About 10 more minutes and I’d have enough to listen to both on the way to uni and on the way home the day it’s released.”
Each show has a life of its own and stretching or shortening it to fit a set time would make it feel/sound strange. Perhaps you could change Uni to fit the podcast time! ;)

“Maybe less “random guests”.”
We don’t have any “random” guests. Everybody on the show is either a reviewer, modder or webmaster.

“Forever. :-)”
How cool would that be. 24 hour podcast station.

“Talking more about the future of mods.”
We can do that but there’s only so much we can say.

“Map of the week, in fact just talk more about maps for CS/TF2/HL2. You mention lots of mods but barely any other content made by the community!”
As mentioned earlier I don’t believe there is enough maps or mods released each week to have a MOTW. It’s worth remembering that the podcast is not aimed at CS or TF2 players, but HALF-LIFE players. I know many of them also play CS and/or TF2 but that’s not the focus of the show.

“Less of the immature arguing and slating bad mods, if they are bad, just don’t talk about them.”
Well I think that sometimes listeners take some of our comments too seriously. But slating mods for the sake of it is wrong. I do strongly disagree with the idea that we shouldn’t mention bad mods. They need to be discussed too.

“Good show so far, I think there are many improvements to be had, but it’s fairly new so I’m waiting to see new features. I don’t really want to hear the same things each week. Zombie mod this, zombie mod that, Left4dead this, left4dead that. I actually liked zombies before I stated listening to this podcast now I’m totally bored of them.”
That’s funny. Listening to us made you bored of Zombie mods. We do have a few different features that we want to include on different shows but we can’t please everybody all the time.

“I want to hear more discussions about content made by the community and I want to hear more discussions about said content. ‘What makes a good map?’ and general discussions about mod teams, ‘Whats the best way to do it?’ and ‘How not to do it”. Also, the same point about content created by teams, or individuals.”
The show consists of 90% of this. Remember we have only had about 6 shows and we can’t cover every topic on every show. However, I do think we need to cover the issues you mention. We do have a section called discussion point. I’ll see if we can include it this next show and cover one of your points.

” I strongly believe that discussing some new maps every week for both SP and MP would interest a lot more level-designers.”
To my knowledge we have discussed new maps for SP and P every week since we started.

“Tell Phillip to stop whining about multiplayer games and zombies.”
No! ;) Seriously, I am just expressing my opinion. I don’t whine about MP in general, I just sya I don’t like them. I am often complementary of MP games.

“I think that the podcast could be shorter then it currently is as it tends to drag out a little bit towards to end”
You could be right but most listeners want it longer. We normally just finish when it feels right.

“I also believe that Phillip needs to stop saying, “boooooooring”, and it comes off as childish and silly.”,/em>
I’ve only said it twice. It’s also seems to have become my catch phrase, so it looks like it’s here to stay.

“After the news section, concentrate on one topic and cover it well”
That’s not always as easy as it sounds. Sometimes the discussions seems to fall off.

“Thanks to you, I’ve played Coastline to Atmosphere, joined Interlopers and started mapping – not bad for one show!”
Fantastic!

“Maybe an official Valve update once in a while (get Gabe to update us all in a couple of minutes)”
Maybe one day.

“Random Gaming Enlightenment Moment”
Mmmm, sounds like an interesting topic.

“Or maybe a weekly event with a featured mp mod we could all play together. I just think it might be a good idea to bring the newly formed community together.”
That’s a great idea, although I’m not sure which game we could use. We should explore the possibility of a Podcast 17 Playing Event.

“I think maybe it would be a good idea to do a visual podcast, then you could put playing or images of what you are talking about, live links I don’t know.
We have planned to introduce that at some point in the future. In fact we have started a Podcast account on Vimeo and will be uploading all the cast and then publishing the link. It will then be easy to slowly introduce the visual aspect.

“Get the listeners more involved. Maybe tell in advance one of the mods you will be talking about the following week so we can play before the broadcast.”
We do published the agenda and it is available from the Forum. How else would you suggest to get the listeners involved?

“What about broadcasting twice a week”
Too difficult I am afraid. Scheduling guest and other stuff is really hard.

“A quick idea for the site to get the forum going. Like Interlopers you could link broadcast comments directly to the forum, so when you comment you actually do it on the forum. The forum link is sort of small and hidden away. It would be nice to have the forum grow!”
The problem with that is that the site already has a comment system. Interlopers doesn’t use the same software we do. However, you are right it might encourage more discussion on the forum. It would mean either changing the software we use or changing the way we use it. I’ll chat to William about it.

“PS: Please encourage modders to try and be more original with their ideas. It seems to me that most jump on the industry bandwagon and just redo things that we’ve already seen. Anti-terrorism, space horror. How can we get people to start thinking creatively and come up with original stuff? Has it all been done already – all there is left is revising?”
Well, we try but we can only do so much.

@Snotball: That’s the plan

@Oakley: We are just informing people that the survey is up and this area of the blog will be used to address the concerns brought up. We haven’t received enough responses yet to warrant any content so don’t forget to fill in the survey!!

Am I missing something?

All I hear is Phil reading whats written down here! =S
I thought this would be you talking about what people wrote! I guess that will be in next episode.
