News Roundup Side Episode?

Over the past week or so we have been toying with the idea of a recording a separate mini-episode, to fill the news gap left by the updated show format. William briefly mentioned it during last week’s episode, but this week made a more direct request for your opinions.

Over the past week or so we have been toying with the idea of a recording a separate mini-episode, to fill the news gap left by the updated show format. William briefly mentioned it during last week’s episode, but this week made a more direct request for your opinions.

For those who are still on the fence, or who are unsure about what exactly the mini-episode would involve, here is a brief list summarising the facts so far.

  • The mini-episode would cover the full agenda, not just the more personally interesting items.
  • It would usually be presented by William alone.
  • It would be in the format of a news bulletin, lasting around 20-30 minutes max.
  • It would likely be recorded just before or just after the main episode is edited, then published around the same time.
  • It would be accompanied by a brief text summary of each item, in place of the main episode’s shownotes.
  • It would have its own separate iTunes feed, allowing people to subscribe each separately.

Tell us whether you think it’s a good idea in the comments below, along with any suggestions or thoughts you care to add.

Like a lot of people, I don’t think it’s necessary as long as you always mention the actual releases and other really important stuff in the actual show. If I want to see modification news and updates, I can go to PlanetPhillip/ModDB/Planet Half-Life/HalfLife2.net.

Here’s the deal with the agenda versus using the notes: a few people who listen to the live stream read the agenda. I bet that none of the people that listen to the recording read the agenda.
On the other hand, anyone that listens to the recording and plans to reply will see the notes. That’s why I kept insisting on the notes idea.
If it is possible, extend the show notes with a part called ‘Releases not covered in the show’ or something.

:) I don’t like to be in your shoes now, Nic …

I hadn’t thought about that, and after checking, only 8% actually click through to the agendas from the episodes.

Added links, but not all of them. Skipped the ones already linked to in the shownotes, and the April Fools ones.

I thought I’d already replied, but I guess not.

@Herr_Alien’s suggestion:
I have other plans for that area which relate to the actual episode. This is why I have been linking the full agenda since the format change, instead of listing the undiscussed links.

The uptake for an audio roundup of the news seems low, but given the interest in a cramped set of links shoved in the side of the episode posts; Is it safe to assume a news roundup post, even without the audio, would be of more use? Especially if listing each items date, related game/s and players (sp/mp/coop), and marking the ones discussed in an episode.

If so, would it be better to extend the agenda with that information — which is already in the works — or would a more polished blog post each week, perhaps also with a short summary of each item, be of more interest?

I think that’s a good idea, maybe you could get a guest person to do it HINT HINT NUDGE NUDGE WINK WINK

I listen to Podcast 17 for the chat, the lols, and the post-show game sessions. I don’t think it’s necessary for me, it would be a little boring. Although, I would probably listen to it anyway. I’m easy.

I quite like Herr Alien’s idea above. That would be a nice balance between audio & text. The real value of the podcast is the ad-hoc discussion and so I think that would be the best focus of the audio content. Creating a text list/summary of the news still allows us to come to this site as a nice concise round up of the week’s news.

I think a Mini-Episode is a good idea, because episodes get not too long , but if you want to be informed you’ll get it with the mini-episode

Mini-news: no. It’ll take too much time.
Here’s what you can do: on the right side of the notes, where you usually put links, put all the links to every news entry, media update and whatever.
On the main area of the notes (the actual show notes) add just the topics you covered. So, basically what you do now, but with a more rich list of links on the right side.
